What is ELDT? Entry-Level Driver Training explained

Updated October 2026

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) is the federal training standard for new commercial drivers. It took effect February 7, 2022.

Who needs it

  • Getting a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time
  • Upgrading from Class B to Class A
  • Getting a passenger (P), school bus (S) or hazmat (H) endorsement for the first time

Theory and behind-the-wheel

ELDT has two parts: theory (classroom knowledge, which can be online) and behind-the-wheel (range and public road). Hazmat requires theory only. You can use different registered providers for each part.

The 80% rule

You must score at least 80% on the theory assessment.

The Training Provider Registry

Your provider must be listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry and reports your completion there. Your state checks the Registry before your skills test or hazmat knowledge test.

Endorsements that don't need ELDT

Tanker (N) and doubles/triples (T) don't require ELDT, though you still need to pass your state's knowledge test.
